Diogenes the Cynic, on a journey, came to a river running full to its banks, and stopped on the bank, at a loss. A man who was in the habit of carrying people across, seeing him perplexed, came up, took him on his shoulders, and obligingly carried him to the other side. Diogenes stood there, reproaching himself for the poverty that kept him from repaying his benefactor. He was still musing on this when the man, spotting another traveller who could not cross, ran to him and carried him over too. Then Diogenes went up to the ferryman and said, "I am no longer grateful for your service; for I see it is not judgement but a compulsion that makes you do what you do."
Kindness without judgement may be mistaken for a lack of discernment.Moral
