The Project
Aesopica brings together the fables attributed to Aesop, the Greek fabulist who likely lived in the 6th century BC. These are short allegorical tales that have been transmitted for millennia in different forms and versions. The catalogue follows the numbering adopted by Émile Chambry in his edition of 358 texts, one of the principal modern references for the corpus.
Each fable can be consulted in multiple languages. Translations, adaptations, sources, and related materials will gradually be brought together in a continuously expanding archive. The aim is to provide simple and well-organised access to one of the most influential narrative collections in history.
Over time, each fable will be accompanied by an original work created by a different emerging artist. These stories have been illustrated and reinterpreted in every era, reflecting ever-changing sensibilities. Aesopica will thus combine the traditional fable heritage with a contemporary visual gallery inspired by it.
