FableNº 270

The Ass, the Fox, and the Lion

An ass and a fox, having gone into partnership, went out to hunt. A lion crossed their path. Seeing the danger hanging over them, the fox went up to the lion and undertook to hand over the ass, if he promised him his safety. The lion having declared that he would let him go, the fox led the ass into a trap and made him fall in. The lion, seeing that the ass could not escape, seized the fox first, and then turned to the ass.

Those who lay traps for their partners often destroy themselves, without realising it, along with their victims.
