FableNº 166

The Crow and Hermes

A crow caught in a snare promised Apollo to burn incense to him; but, saved from danger, he forgot his promise. Caught again, in another snare, he left Apollo aside and turned to Hermes, to whom he promised a sacrifice. But that god answered him, "Wretch, how could I trust you, who have disowned and cheated your first master?"

Those who repay kindness with ingratitude cannot expect help when difficulty comes.
