FableNº 3

The Eagle and the Fox

An eagle and a fox became friends and chose to live near one another. But the eagle, from her high nest, swooped down, carried off the fox's cubs, and fed them to her young, while the fox could only watch from below, unable to climb. Not long after, the eagle snatched meat from an altar where a goat was being offered; a live ember clung to it and set the nest ablaze. The half-grown eaglets tumbled to the ground, and there the fox devoured them in her turn.

Whoever betrays a friend may escape that friend's revenge, but not the justice that finds them by another road.
