FableNº 203

The Lion and the Boar

In the summer season, when the heat brings on thirst, a lion and a boar came to drink at a small spring. They quarrelled over who should drink first, and from the quarrel they came to a fight to the death. But suddenly, having turned round to catch their breath, they saw vultures waiting to devour whichever fell first. So, putting an end to their enmity, they said, "It is better to become friends than to serve as food for vultures and crows."

It is a fine thing to put an end to wicked quarrels and rivalries; for the outcome is dangerous for all parties.
