FableNº 200

The Lion, the Bear, and the Fox

A lion and a bear, having found a fawn, fought over which of them should have it. They dealt each other terrible blows, until at last, seized with dizziness, they collapsed half dead. A fox passing by, seeing them worn out and the fawn lying between them, carried it off and went away, slipping between the two of them. And they, unable to get up, muttered, "How wretched we are! It was for the fox that we took all this trouble."

We are rightly angered when strangers carry off the fruit of our labour.
