The Nightingale and the Swallow

A swallow urged the nightingale to come and nest under the eaves of houses, among people, as she herself did. But the nightingale refused, saying that living close to human beings only revived the memory of the sorrows she had once suffered there, and that she preferred the lonely places of the wild.

Those who have been deeply hurt keep their distance from the places that recall their pain.
