The Old Woman and the Doctor

An old woman whose eyes were diseased called in a doctor for a fee. He came to her house, and at each treatment he gave her, he never failed, while her eyes were closed, to steal her furniture piece by piece. When he had carried off everything, the cure also being finished, he claimed the agreed fee. The old woman refusing to pay, he took her before the magistrates. She declared that she had indeed promised the fee if he cured her sight; but that her condition, after the doctor's cure, was worse than before. "For," she said, "then I could see all the furniture in my house; now, on the contrary, I can see nothing at all."
