FableNº 197

The Trapped Lion and the Ploughman

A lion got into a ploughman's stable. The man, wanting to catch it, shut the courtyard gate. Unable to get out, the lion first devoured the sheep, then set upon the oxen. Then the ploughman, taking fright for himself, opened the gate. When the lion had gone, the ploughman's wife, seeing him groan, said, "You have only what you deserve; for why want to shut in a beast that you should have feared even from afar?"

So those who provoke those stronger than themselves naturally have to bear the consequences of their folly.
