The Traveller and Truth

A traveller passing through a desert met a solitary woman who kept her eyes lowered. "Who are you?" he asked. "Truth," she replied. "And for what reason have you left the city and taken to living in the desert?" She replied, "Because, in ancient times, lying was to be found only among a small number of people; now it is among all, whatever one hears and whatever one says."
