FableNº 149

The Two Dung-Beetles

A bull was grazing on a small island, and two dung-beetles fed on his dung. When winter came, one said to the other that he wanted to cross to the mainland, so that his companion, being alone, might have food enough, while he went over there to pass the winter. He added that, if he found fodder in plenty there, he would bring some back. Now, on reaching the mainland, he came upon dung in abundance and fresh; he settled there and fed on it. When winter was over, he came back to the island. His companion, seeing him fat and in good condition, reminded him of his promise and reproached him for bringing nothing back. "Don't blame me," he replied, "but the nature of the place: one can find a living there, but it is impossible to carry anything away."
