FableNº 215

The Wolves and the Dogs at War

Between the wolves and the dogs, hatred broke out one day. The dogs elected a Greek dog as their general. Now he was in no hurry to join battle, despite the violent threats of the wolves. "Do you know," he said to them, "why I bide my time? It is because we should always deliberate before acting. You are all of the same breed and the same colour; but our own soldiers have very varied ways, and each is proud of the country he comes from. Even the colour is not uniform and alike for all: some are black, others russet, others white or ash-grey. How could I lead to war those who are not in agreement and who are dissimilar in everything?"

In all armies, it is unity of will and of thought that secures victory over the enemy.
