Mother

The mothers of Aesop love in ways that shape or spoil. The crab tells her child to walk straight and cannot show him how. One applauds a small theft and raises a thief for the gallows. The lark's mother reads the harvest by who is promised to do the work. They are the fable's first teachers, for good or ill.
