A skilful archer went up into the mountain to hunt there. All the animals fled; the lion alone challenged him to combat. The man let fly a shaft at him and, having hit him, said, "See what my messenger is; after this I'll come to you myself." The wounded lion took to flight. Meanwhile a fox called to him to take heart and not to flee. The lion replied, "You won't fool me; if he has so bitter a messenger, when he comes himself, what shall I do?"
