A carter was driving his wagon towards a village. When the wagon fell into a deep ravine, instead of helping to get it out, the carter stood there doing nothing, calling on Heracles alone of all the gods, whom he particularly honoured. Heracles appeared to him and said, "Put your hand to the wheels, goad your oxen, and call on the gods only while making an effort yourself; otherwise you will call on them in vain."
