FableNº 74

The Cowherd and the Lion

A cowherd grazing a herd of oxen lost a calf. He searched all round the neighbourhood without finding it. Then he promised Zeus that, if he found the thief, he would sacrifice a kid to him. Now, on entering a wood, he saw a lion devouring the calf; terrified, he raised his hands to heaven and cried, "O sovereign Zeus, a moment ago I vowed to sacrifice you a kid if I found the thief; now I will sacrifice you a bull, if I escape the thief's claws."

*In distress we may long for a remedy, only to flee from it once it appears.
