FableNº 171

The Crow and the Dog

A crow offering a victim to Athena invited a dog to the sacrificial banquet. The dog said to her, "Why do you spend your goods on useless sacrifices? For the goddess hates you so much that she has stripped all credence from your omens." To which the crow replied, "But that is precisely why I sacrifice to her: I know she is ill-disposed towards me, and I want her to be reconciled with me."

Many people do not hesitate to do good to their enemies, because they are afraid of them.
