FableNº 170

The Crow and the Raven

The crow grew jealous of the raven, because the raven gives omens to people, foretells the future to them, and for that reason is called on by them as a witness; so she wanted to claim the same privileges for herself. Accordingly, on seeing travellers passing, she went and perched on a tree and there let out loud cries. At her voice, the travellers turned round, alarmed; but one of them spoke up and said, "Come, friends, let's go on our way: it's only a crow, its cries give no omen."

Those who compete with people stronger than themselves fail to equal them and make themselves ridiculous.
