The Doe and the Vine

A doe, pursued by hunters, hid under a vine. When they had gone a little past, she thought herself perfectly hidden and began to browse on the vine leaves. As the leaves stirred, the hunters turned round and, thinking, as was true, that there was a beast hidden beneath, killed the doe with their darts. As she felt herself dying, she said these words: "I have richly deserved it; for I should not have harmed the one that had saved me."
