FableNº 23

The Fishermen and the Stone

Some fishermen were hauling in a net. It felt heavy, and they rejoiced and danced, sure of a fine catch. But when they dragged it ashore, they found little fish in it: stones and rubbish had filled it instead. They were bitterly upset, less at the loss itself than at having expected the opposite. But one of them, an old man, said, "Let us stop grieving, friends. Joy, it seems, has sorrow for a sister, and after rejoicing so much in advance, we were bound to meet some disappointment."

Since life is forever changing, never count on the same good luck twice; no spell of fair weather but is followed by a storm.
