The Gardener and the Dog

A gardener's dog had fallen into a well. The gardener, wanting to pull it out, went down into the well himself. Imagining that he had come to push it deeper, the dog turned and bit him. The gardener, smarting from his wound, climbed back up, saying, "It serves me right: what business had I to rush to save a beast that wanted to do away with itself?"
