FableNº 64

The Ploughman and the Wolf

After unhitching his team, a ploughman was leading it to the watering place. Meanwhile a hungry wolf, looking for food, came upon the plough and at first began to lick the inner sides of the yoke; then little by little, without noticing, he lowered his neck into it, and, unable to free it, dragged the plough along the furrow. The ploughman, coming back, caught sight of him and said, "Ah, you villainous head! If only you would give up plunder and brigandage and take to working the land!"

So wicked people may profess virtue all they like: their character makes them impossible to believe.
