FableNº 184

The Sleeping Dog and the Wolf

A dog was sleeping in front of a farm. A wolf swooped on him and was about to make a meal of him, when the dog begged him not to kill him just yet. "Right now," he said, "I am thin and scrawny; but wait a while: my masters are going to hold a wedding; I too will get some good mouthfuls there, I'll grow fat, and I'll make a more pleasant meal for you." The wolf believed him and went off. Some time later he came back, and found the dog sleeping in an upper room of the house; he stopped below and called to him, reminding him of their agreement. Then the dog said, "O wolf, if from today you see me sleeping in front of the farm, don't wait for any wedding."
