FableNº 91

The Sorceress

A sorceress made a trade of supplying charms and means of appeasing the anger of the gods. She never lacked custom and made a good living by it. But she was accused, on this account, of innovating in matters of religion; she was brought to court, and her accusers had her condemned to death. As she was being led away from the tribunal, a bystander said to her, "Hey, woman, you who claimed to turn aside the anger of the gods, how is it you couldn't even persuade a few men?"

*Those who promise wonders may prove incapable of ordinary things.
