FableNº 158

The Thieves and the Cock

Some thieves, having broken into a house, found nothing there but a cock; they took it and withdrew. And it, about to be killed by them, begged them to let it go, pleading that it was useful to people, waking them at night for their work. "All the more reason to kill you," they cried; "for by waking people, you stop us from stealing."

What most vexes wicked people is what is of service to good people.
