FableNº 175

The Two Dogs

A man had two dogs. He trained one to hunt and made the other a guardian of the house. Now when the hunting dog went out to hunt and caught some game, the master threw part of it to the other dog as well. The hunting dog, displeased, reproached his companion: it was he who went out and had the hardship every time, while his companion, doing nothing, enjoyed the fruit of his labours. The watchdog replied, "Well now, it is not I who should be blamed, but our master, who taught me not to work, but to live off the work of others."

Idle children are not to be blamed, when their parents raise them in idleness.
