FableNº 228

The Wolf and the Ass

A wolf, having become chief of the other wolves, laid down general laws providing that whatever each caught in the hunt he would put in common and share equally among all: in this way the wolves would no longer be seen, reduced to want, eating one another. But an ass came forward, and, shaking his mane, said, "It is a fine thought that his heart has inspired in the wolf. But how is it that you yourself have stowed away in your den your booty from yesterday? Bring it to the community and share it out." The wolf, confounded, abolished his laws.

Those who make laws for others lose all authority when they refuse to obey those laws themselves.
