The ass thought the horse lucky to be fed in abundance and well looked after, while he himself had not even straw enough, though he was put to so much work. But the time of war came: the horse had to carry a rider armed from head to foot, who pushed him this way and that and even flung him into the midst of the enemy, where the horse, riddled with wounds, went down. Seeing this, the ass changed his mind and pitied the horse.
We should not envy leaders or the rich, but think of the envy and the dangers to which they are exposed, and resign ourselves to poverty.Moral
