FableNº 223

The Wolf and the Old Woman

A hungry wolf was prowling in search of food. Having come to a certain spot, he heard a little child crying and an old woman saying to it, "Stop crying, or I'll give you to the wolf this instant." The wolf, thinking the old woman meant it, stopped and waited a long time. When evening came, he heard the old woman again, coddling the little child and saying, "If the wolf comes here, we'll kill him, my child." Hearing these words, the wolf set off again, saying, "In this farm they say one thing and do another."
