FableNº 218

The Wolves, the Sheep, and the Ram

The wolves sent envoys to the sheep, offering to make a lasting peace with them, if they would hand over the dogs to be put to death. The stupid sheep agreed to do so; but an old ram cried out, "How could I believe you and live with you, when, even under the guard of the dogs, I cannot graze in safety?"

We should not give up what secures our safety, by trusting the oaths of our irreconcilable enemies.
