A doe blind in one eye went down to the seashore and began to graze there, keeping her sound eye turned towards the land to watch for the coming of hunters, and her blind eye towards the sea, from which she suspected no danger. But some men sailing along that spot caught sight of her, took aim, and shot her down. As she breathed her last, she said to herself, "How wretched I am! I watched the land, which I thought full of snares, and the sea, where I counted on finding refuge, has been far more deadly to me."
